Daniel Radcliffe expresses disappointment over J.K. Rowling's stance on trans issues.

Daniel Radcliffe rose to fame as a kid starring as Harry Potter in the movie series inspired by J.K. Rowling's wildly popular books.

However, their paths diverge dramatically when it comes to transgender rights.

In an interview with The Atlantic, Daniel Radcliffe spoke about J.K. Rowling's past statements which were seen as anti-trans by many. "It's really sad, ultimately," he said, reflecting on the person he knew, the times they spent together, and the books she wrote-all of which he sees as "so deeply empathic." Notably, they've been out of touch for several years now.

In 2020, Rowling posted a series of tweets about an article using the term "people who menstruate" and expressing her belief that aspects of the trans movement are eroding women's rights. CNN reached out to her representatives for comment.

Shortly following Rowling's posts in 2020, Radcliffe made a statement through The Trevor Project. "Transgender women are women," he asserted. "Any statement to the contrary negates the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all guidelines from professional healthcare institutions who have much greater knowledge about this subject."

Radcliffe, alongside Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, has publicly supported the trans community. This has garnered significant attention from the media, specifically in the UK, placing them at odds with the author whose works launched their careers.

"There's a storyline where 'Are these three kids ungrateful brats?' that people have longed for, and they finally had the chance to write it," he told The Atlantic. "So, good for them, I guess."

Although Radcliffe acknowledges that Harry Potter wouldn't have existed without Rowling and therefore his life wouldn't have turned out the same way either, he emphasized that he doesn't feel obligated to support opinions he doesn't share for the rest of his life.

Recently, Rowling shared her thoughts on a report that, in her view, validated her stance. A follower joked that they were "just waiting for Dan and Emma to give you a very public apology." She replied, "Not safe, I'm afraid." Regarding Daniel, she labeled him and his co-stars as "celebs who cosied up to a movement intent on eroding women's hard-won rights."

In response to Rowling's latest message, Radcliffe told The Atlantic, "I will continue to support the rights of all LGBTQ people, and I have no additional comment on this."
