Incorrect beginning for "Furiosa" - Will the upcoming "Mad Max" film be scrapped?

The upcoming "Mad Max" spin-off "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" has fallen short at the box office, gathering only $32 million in North America on its opening weekend. Internationally, it managed to collect an additional $36.5 million - still not enough to cover its alleged $168 million production budget. As per "The Hollywood Reporter", these underwhelming box office numbers may now put the future of another planned "Mad Max" movie, "The Wasteland", in jeopardy.

"The Wasteland" - A Historical Shadow

"Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" was penned by George Miller before the initiation of "Mad Max: Fury Road" filming in 2015, focusing on the past of Furiosa (formerly played by Charlize Theron). From this writing, another screenplay, "The Wasteland", emerged. This film will center around the life of Max Rockatansky (portrayed by Tom Hardy in "Fury Road"), narrating events leading to the fourth "Mad Max" movie. It's also anticipated to feature a young mother and, in true franchise fashion, plenty of action sequences.

"Furiosa" Missing Out on Diverse Demographics

Despite Miller's desire to make "The Wasteland", the lackluster performance of "Furiosa" has raised concerns. At Cannes Film Festival, where the prequel premiered, Miller stated, "I'll definitely wait and see how 'Furiosa' does before considering 'The Wasteland'." The reason for "Furiosa's" poor performance seems to be its inability to entice a diverse audience. While "Mad Max: Fury Road" drew 60% male viewers, "Furiosa" has seen this proportion arrive at 71%. The biggest reduction in viewership was between 18-24 year-olds, dropping from 31% for "Fury Road" to just 21% for "Furiosa" in the US markets.

With the pivotal demographic expressing a lack of interest in "Furiosa", the fate of "The Wasteland" may likely hang in the balance, making business viability more challenging.
