The relationship between Donald and Melania Trump has not always seemed intimate in the past. However, the fact that the former First Lady disappeared at both Christmas and New Year is somewhat puzzling. Now the ex-US president has revealed the reason for this.
There was already no sign of Melania Trump in the family photo at Christmas. Since then, many have been wondering where former US President Donald Trump's wife actually is. While at the end of December there was only nebulous talk of "a family matter", the 53-year-old's husband has now come clean.
"Melania - great first lady, so popular that people love her - she is now in hospital with her mother. Her mother Amalija is very sick, but hopefully recovering," Donald Trump said at a New Year's Eve event in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, after his wife once again failed to show up.
People magazine further quotes the 77-year-old as saying, "But she's been very sick, so I just want to say hello to the first lady - we just spoke, down in Miami, great hospital - and hopefully they'll be fine, but they're brave, very brave. She probably knows about 95 percent of the people in this room. We just wish Amalija gets better as soon as possible."
Only rarely in public
In contrast to Melania, almost all the other members of the Trump family were seen in the Christmas photo: Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner, Tiffany Trump, Barron Trump, Donald Trump Jr. and his fiancée Kimberly Guilfoyle. Eric Trump and his wife Lara were also absent - but at least they attended the New Year's event.
Melania Trump's mother, Amalija Knavs, and her father, Viktor Knavs, have lived at the Mar-a-Lago estate in recent years, which is also the home of the ex-US President and former First Lady. Melania and Donald Trump are said to live in separate areas of the complex, but often dine together or attend events at the private club.
Melania Trump has rarely appeared in public since her husband was voted out of office in 2020. She was last seen at the funeral service for Rosalynn Carter, for example. The wife of former US President Jimmy Carter passed away in November. Last month, Melania Trump also made an appearance at a naturalization ceremony for new US citizens.
