Trump aims to take action on "The Apprentice" program.
Ali Abbasi's movie, "The Apprentice," made its debut at Cannes. In it, Sebastian Stan portrays a younger version of ex-US President Donald Trump. Feeling wronged by the film, Trump's legal team intends to sue to prohibit it from being screened in theaters.
The controversial film "The Apprentice" recently had its premiere at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. Not long after, word got out from the US media outlet "Variety": Trump's lawyers are going to sue to block the film directed by Ali Abbasi from being shown in cinemas.
Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for Trump's presidency campaign, is reported to have said, "We'll be filing a lawsuit to challenge the blatantly false claims made by these alleged filmmakers." Cheung perceived the content of the supposed biopic as "pure fiction that sensationalizes lies that have been disproved." He insists the defamatory film should "never be shown."
The film titled "The Apprentice," like Trump's former reality TV show of the same name, sees Stan as young Trump, while "Borat" star Maria Bakalova depicts his ex-wife Ivana Trump (who passed away in 2022). Jeremy Strong from "Succession" portrays Trump's lawyer Roy Cohn.
Lengthy applause in Cannes
According to Variety, at the premiere, the audience stood and applauded for over eight minutes. However, one scene in particular sparked debate among viewers. The scene features non-consensual sex between Trump and Ivana, with him brutally pushing his wife to the ground.
The film's controversial nature comes as no surprise, given its subject matter. Trump's election bid for a new presidency has led to a strong desire to keep the potentially damaging film out of theaters. Further, it's noted that "The Apprentice," competing for the Palm d'Or, paints Trump in a negative light in a variety of ways, for instance showing him addicted to pills and undergoing liposuction. The official cinema release date for "The Apprentice" has not yet been confirmed.

Despite the cinematic success of "The Apprentice" at the Cannes Film Festival, Donald Trump's legal team has threatened to take legal action to prevent its screening in theaters due to its portrayal of the ex-US President. The movie, directed by Ali Abbasi, features Sebastian Stan as a younger Trump and has sparked controversy due to its explicit content.
The controversy surrounding "The Apprentice" has added to Trump's ongoing battle with Hollywood and the entertainment industry, following the release of several films and documentaries critical of his presidency.
