Top Violinist Garrett Rejects Shortened Workweek
The idea of achieving a balance between work and personal life is a hot topic of discussion in Germany. Violinist David Garrett asserts that striving for success demands dedication and sacrifice. He maintains that a four-day work week won't yield impressive career achievements.
Famed violinist David Garrett, 43, believes one cannot achieve remarkable career success with a focus on work-life balance. "Having a work-life balance can help you live a pleasant life," he stated. "But it won't grant you a remarkable career because of it," Garrett added. "That's the path the younger generation needs to take." According to Garrett, reaching great heights often requires going the extra mile.
In Germany, there's been ongoing debate about how work time and personal life should coexist. A key aspect of this conversation involves the four-day work week. Younger generations seem to prioritize this balance.
Garrett stated, "You can have a four-day work week in your life." However, don't expect "financial or career" gains from it. Instead, he suggested we discover our passions and work tirelessly towards them.
Garrett, a highly accomplished musician, has experienced great success. Born in Aachen, his father was a German lawyer and his mother an American dancer. He won his first competition early on and has entertained large audiences for years, selling millions of records. In early 2023, he announced a new album and a global tour, kicking off in Munich. He has spent considerable time on this project, starting in fall 2022.
When prompted about his upbringing, Garrett described it as strict and disciplined. He would often practice the violin deep into the night.
"It's a different career path," he reflected. "At the same time, there's no need to worry that someone else can do what I do as quickly," the musician noted. This route is difficult, rocky, and tough. "And you also need a certain mindset for it. You must be firmly dedicated and determined."

Despite Garrett's success in recreational sports, like music, he emphasizes the importance of dedication and sacrifice, even suggesting that a four-day workweek might not be conducive to achieving significant career milestones within the entertainment industry. The labor market requirement for triumph might often include going the extra mile, which might not align with the four-day week desires of the younger generation.
