Following a time span exceeding 25 years,... - The Melt Festival comes to an end.
Next year's Melt Festival, held from July 11th to 13th, 2024, will be the final edition. Festival organizers made the announcement on Instagram, stating that the popular event in Saxony-Anhalt will be shutting down.
"We regretfully announce that this will be the final year for the MELT Festival. Due to certain circumstances, we are unable to continue organizing the event," the message on their Instagram account reads. They failed to mention what specific factors led to their decision.
"If someone had told us in 1997, our first year, that the MELT Festival would still be going strong in 2024, we would have probably called them insane," they continued. "Our goal has always been to create special, unique experiences, and a place where people can let go and fully immerse themselves in music and the night."
The organizers also mentioned "unprecedented changes in the festival landscape that can't be reconciled with the festival's core brand." Yet, they didn't provide any additional details.
Over a Quarter-Century of Melt Festival
The first Melt Festival back in 1997 took place at Bernsteinsee in Velten, Brandenburg. The event moved to an airfield in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern the following year, where it stays to this day and serves as the annual venue for the competition festival Fusion.
Since 1999, Ferropolis near Graefenhainichen in Saxony-Anhalt has hosted the Melt Festival. This "City of Iron" is located close by. An exception was made in 2003, when a lack of sponsorship engagement and unfavorable weather conditions forced the cancellation of the festival for that year only.
Notable performances at this festival include the British rock group Oasis and electro wizard Aphex Twin. Performances from acts spanning both rock music and electro have become a staple of the festival, taking place at the industrial ruins of Ferropolis.
For the last Melt Festival in July 2024, James Blake (35), the Sugababes, and renowned DJ Koze (52) have already confirmed their appearances.
