The fashion style of Carrie Bradshaw may be shifting in a different direction.

Following the premiere of the "Sex and the City" reboot, the fictional Vogue writer's comical outfit choices have faced more backlash than applause. Why is this the case?

The fashion style of Carrie Bradshaw may be shifting in a different direction.

Bradshaw's unique style has always been a part of her charm. The Instagram account, @everyoutfitonsatc, has captured and preserved some of her best looks for their 746,000 followers. Many of her early SATC outfits receive praise from Carrie's supporters, even for the more daring outfits.

"I love this Carrie outfit! Only she could pull it off," one fan commented under a photo of Bradshaw in a neon pink and green Betsy Johnson tulle dress with abstract printed leggings. "She looks fabulous in anything."

However, since the launch of the series reboot "And Just Like That..." in 2021, Bradshaw's eccentric wardrobe has received more criticism than praise. HBO Max, which airs "And Just Like That...," is also owned by CNN's parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery. While filming for the show's third season is ongoing, Bradshaw has been seen wearing a sheer, rose-covered frock by Simone Rocha, a vintage color-blocked Ossie Clark dress, and an oversized gingham sun hat by Maryam Keyhani.

These looks have not been well-received by some fans of the show. "There's too much going on," reads one comment under @everyoutfitonsatc's post of Parker wearing the Maryam Keyhani hat. "This wasn't Carrie's style... This is trash," reads another.

Some viewers blame the departure of Patricia Field, the stylist behind Carrie's wardrobe in the original series, for the criticism. But Field, who was known for her own fashion idiosyncrasies, told The Guardian in February that "following fashion trends is a waste" and "originality is what counts."

The show's current stylists, Molly Rogers and Danny Santiago, have embraced that philosophy with Bradshaw's mix of patterns and silhouettes. But it's a style that has been overlooked, and viewers wonder if audiences are less tolerant of an eclectic dresser in her late 50s than they were in her 30s. It seems like a subject worth exploring through Bradshaw's newspaper column, and one that Jessica Parker has thoughts on as well.

"There's so much misogynist chatter in response to us that would never happen to a man," Parker told Vogue in 2021. "Especially on social media. Everyone has something to say."
