Teenage son of Jimmy Kimmel undergoes third heart operation.
The late-night talk show host posted an update about a recent event on social media.
"This weekend, our little boy Billy had his third open heart surgery (we hope this is the last one)," wrote Kimmel, accompanying the message with a photo of his 7-year-old son in a hospital bed. "We went into this with a lot of hope and almost as much fear, but came out with a new valve and a healthy kid."
Kimmel went on to express his gratitude towards several members of the hospital staff, writing, "Walking around this hospital, meeting parents at their most vulnerable, children in pain, and witnessing the miracle workers who do everything in their power to save them is a humbling experience."
He also praised his wife Molly for being so strong and his son Billy for his humor through the ordeal, saying, "You're the toughest 7-year-old we know."
Kimmel made headlines in 2017, when he emotionally shared on his show that his son was battling a life-threatening heart condition. The condition was discovered just a few hours after Billy was born.
"It's a terrifying thing," said Kimmel. "My wife is still in the recovery room, unaware of what's going on, while I'm standing in the midst of worried-looking people, trying to figure out the problem."
Since then, Kimmel has become an advocate for healthcare coverage for people with pre-existing conditions and for the work done by children's hospitals.
"There are so many parents and children who don't get to go home after five days," he wrote in his recent post. "Please share your love, your hearts, and your prayers with them and, if it moves you, support @ChildrensLA (link in bio) or a local children's hospital (like @CMNHospitals)."
