Singer Sarah Engels sparked some controversy recently when she shared a photo on May 19th of herself holding her belly on her Instagram story. She captioned the image with "On this occasion" and added a pregnancy symbol. However, it wasn't until hours later that she cleared up the confusion, explaining her unusual post.
The singer is currently enjoying some time in Dubai with her husband, Julian Engels. Under a photo of Sarah stand-up paddling in front of the Atlantis Hotel, some congratulatory comments appeared assuming a potential pregnancy. Some followers even noticed that she might have gained a few pounds, indicating a possible baby bump.
"Not pregnant"
The former "DSDS" contestant addressed the rumours by sharing a post with a pregnancy symbol, only to later explain that she wasn't expecting a baby, but rather wanted to point out the hurtfulness of constant pregnancy rumours. "Dear ones... No, I'm not pregnant, but I've received an endless number of messages in the last two days saying that I look pregnant, that I'm not pregnant," she wrote. Engels expressed concern about the unintended consequences of such rumours. "You never know what might be behind it, whether she might want to get pregnant and is disappointed not to be, or has simply put on a few kilos," she said.
Engels went on to share some of the messages she had received, "I know that most of you never meant any harm and that you would be happy for us," she added, before clarifying that the belly in question was a result of "a food belly," or a belly full of food.
Mixed reactions
Sarah Engels' attempt to address the rumours was met with a mix of reactions. Some users appreciated her stance and agreed with her comment on the sensitive nature of the topic. Others, however, believed that her post was inappropriate and insensitive. One user commented, "I hope she's not just joking. A joke like that is not only inappropriate on April 1st."
Still, others accused the singer of seeking attention, calling out her effort to stay relevant by sparking debate. Despite this, Sarah Engels has already had two kids with her husband Julian Engels, having welcomed daughter Solea in December 2021 and son Alessio with ex-husband and "DSDS" winner, Pietro Lombardi. In addition, Sarah is currently expecting her third child with her new partner Laura Maria Rypa.
