3rd soccer league - Regensburg pro Diawusie: Club announces cause of death

Following the death of Agyemang Diawusie, SSV Jahn Regensburg will play their home match in the 3rd soccer league against SC Freiburg II in special remembrance of the striker. The Upper Palatinate club said on Thursday that it had "discussed and agreed with the deceased player's closest personal and family circle in detail and with an open mind". The home game this Sunday (4.30 pm) will therefore take place as planned.

According to the German Football Association(DFB), a minute's silence is planned before kick-off in the matches of the upcoming 17th matchday. The DFB also recommends that the teams wear mourning shirts at the weekend.

Regensburg: suspected myocarditis

According to the club, Diawusie died last Tuesday "from a sudden cardiac death, presumably triggered by a viral infection with suspected myocarditis" at the age of just 25.

"It was and is very important to us as a club to have made this decision in consultation with all parties, taking into account all emotional situations and circumstances and as a result of a very intensive consideration process," said Regensburg's sporting director Achim Beierlorzer on the staging of the home game. "In this context, we as SSV Jahn would also like to thank the entire German soccer community for their great sympathy and for the many different words of condolence on various channels. It is a comfort to know that we - and especially Agy's family - are not alone in our grief. We continue to ask that the privacy of Agyemang Diawusie's personal circle be respected."
