Udo Lindenberg at Sylt-Gegröle event - Racism should not be used as a political tactic

In his extensive career, Udo Lindenberg (78) has frequently shared his political opinions, with many of his songs taking a stance against right-wing extremism and disregard for others. Faced with the recent misuse of the popular party song "L'amour toujours" for racist slurs, causing quite a commotion, he felt compelled to make a clear statement once more.

On his Instagram account, the singer unleashed an enraged response to the racist occurrences on Sylt and elsewhere, where the original lyrics of the party anthem by Italian musician Gigi D'Agostino (56) were changed to xenophobic phrases.

"The spirits of the dark German past show no mercy"

"As we were recently celebrating our Basic Law - the dignity of man," Lindenberg started his post, "but the spirits of the dark German past are showing no mercy." Before, Neo-Nazis had recognizable features like shaved heads, but today they've updated their image, with "fashionable haircuts, and a glass of champagne in hand instead of a baseball bat." But the "Schnöseldorfer SchickiMicki Creepers" still spout the same "cold crap."

"Those who downplay these incidents are already quite blind"

Letting racism become a party hit or disrespect for others a trend is unacceptable. Those who downplay these incidents should "already be quite blind," considering German history. Lindenberg concluded his post with a quote from his 1992 song "Panic-Panther," written in response to the brutal Skinhead riots post-Wall: "So fascists piss on you, no one misses you." Along with his comment, Udo Lindenberg shared an image of himself with his middle finger raised.
