Paul McCartney ridicules Bruce Springsteen at London recognition event.
During the Ivor Novello Awards held at Grosvenor House in London, it was Bruce Springsteen's turn to be inducted into the prestigious fellowship. Sir Paul McCartney took on this responsibility, sharing glowing words about the American singer-songwriter. Although the ceremony wasn't broadcasted, the BBC gave us a glimpse into his speech.
He expressed that no one else had more deserved the fellowship, alluding to David Bowie, Bob Dylan, and even Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Beyoncé and Taylor Swift. However, he described Springsteen as being "in the top five." McCartney also mentioned Bruce was known as the "American working man" but he joked about how Bruce had never physically worked a day in his life. The Beatles legend went on to say, "He's a lovely, lovely boy."
The Ivor Novello Awards is the highest honor for songwriters and composers in the UK. Chair of the academy, Tom Gray, praised Springsteen, stating: "There is no one more fitting than Bruce Springsteen to be the first international songwriter inducted into our Fellowship. Songwriters tell our stories, capture our lives, express our loves and hardships; Bruce has told the greatest stories."
Upon receiving the honor, Springsteen received a standing ovation. Despite the moment, he admitted to famehosting that he had lost his voice from singing in the rain the night before. The Boss thanked his British fans and artists for inspiring him. "Their depth of knowledge of my work and their dedication constantly keeps me invested here, keeps me coming back to these shores," he said.
Finally, Springsteen covered his classic 1975 hit, "Thunder Road," noteworthy for being one of the 500 greatest songs of all time according to Rolling Stone. Additionally, Lana Del Rey, Skepta, KT Tunstall, and Raye were amongst the other honorees attending this year's Ivor Novello Awards.
