Norman Lear acquired a Hockney artwork for $78,000; it may now be worth up to $35 million.
"The artwork "A Lawn Being Sprinkled" is up for auction, as part of the sale of Norman Lear and Lyn Davis Lear's vast collection, which is predicted to earn over $50 million, reveals Christie's. This piece by Hockney originally broke a record back in 1978 when Lear purchased it, but today, Hockney's most priceless creations sell for hundreds of millions instead of just thousands.
Created in 1967, the painting uses acrylic on canvas to depict a lawn with sprinklers sprinkling water upon it, along with a gray backdrop of a building and a fence. This artwork is the primary draw of a collection that also includes Ed Ruscha's painting "Truth", along with masterpieces from artists like Willem de Kooning, Robert Rauschenberg, and Ellsworth Kelly.
Norman Lear held the title of "the most significant TV producer in history," said Christie's, best known for his groundbreaking shows like "All in the Family," "The Jeffersons," and "Good Times". He breathed his last at his abode in Los Angeles in December, when he was 101 years old.
Max Carter, Christie's vice chairman of 20th and 21st-century art, mentioned in the statement, "The art gathering of Norman and Lyn reflects, just like his groundbreaking productions, a fascination with ideas, alongside a refined aesthetic."
At 86, David Hockney is a celebrated artist globally."
Previously, Hockney's 1972 piece "Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)" sold for $90.3 million at an auction, achieving the highest price ever paid then for a work by a living artist.
Born in Bradford, England, the skilled painter made a journey to California in 1964 and spent several years there, producing some of his iconic pieces."
