Outrage over "Big Little Lies" filming session - Nicole Kidman shattered a door with a rock.

The TV show "Big Little Lies" from 2017 on HBO follows a group of women as they navigate through past and present traumas. Actress Nicole Kidman, aged 56, took on the role of Celeste Wright in the series. Recently, she revealed how demanding the filming of the series was on her mental health.

Nicole Kidman Describes the Emotional Strain of "Big Little Lies"

Kidman even smashed a plate against a door after an intense day of filming because "I couldn't get in" and it was "locked." She later explained this action was caused by her "bottled up" emotions. The next day, she felt angry towards her co-star Alexander Skarsgård, who played her abusive husband Perry Wright, and her director Jean-Marc Vallée, who passed away in 2021.

The Emotional Toll of Television Productions

The way television shows are filmed demands a certain level of emotional strength from actors. "The show just has to keep going, and you just keep going - you show up to work and work and work," explained Kidman. Production days were long, around 12-14 hours, leaving little time for self-care.

Fellow Actresses Support Nicole Kidman

Another project, the 2024 Prime Video series "Expats," left Kidman emotionally drained as well. She mentioned that after filming, she made a comedy to help cope with the psychological impact. Support from fellow actresses Sofia Vergara and Jennifer Aniston was evident at the talk where Kidman spoke candidly about her experiences. Vergara said, "The body doesn't know that what you're going through isn't real," while Aniston revealed she "cried" when Kidman spoke.

"Big Little Lies" aired in 2017 and 2019 with two seasons, featuring Kidman alongside Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, and Zoë Kravitz. Kidman hinted at a possible third season at the end of last year, but no official confirmation has been made.
