MTV terminates its award show events.
In October, unexpectedly, MTV canceled the Europe Music Awards scheduled to be held in Paris, as a result of the conflict in Gaza. Now, the music channel is facing another blow - this time, the long-running Movie & TV Awards have been called off for this year. No explanation has been given.
Since 1992, the MTV Movie & TV Awards have garnered a significant following due to their unique award categories like "Best Kiss" and "Best Fight." But this year, the annual ceremony has been canceled, according to a spokesperson from MTV, who spoke to Billboard. There's no official word on why the awards show is being shelved. However, MTV has stated it plans to bring the awards back in 2025 with a revamped format.
The cancellation of the awards show has sparked speculation in the US media. Last year's ceremony was widely panned due to circumstances surrounding the event. Presenter Drew Barrymore had to pull out from hosting the show just a week before it was due to take place because of a strike by US screenwriters. This led to a pre-recorded version of the awards being aired without a host. The show faced heavy criticism on social media, being labeled as the "worst awards show ever" by The Sun.
It's worth noting that this isn't the first time MTV has decided to cancel an awards show for the MTV Movie & TV Awards. In October, the MTV Europe Music Awards that were meant to occur in Paris in 2023 were scrapped due to the war in Gaza. This was the very first cancellation in the three-decade history of the EMAs.
