MTV discontinues hosting an award event.
October witnessed MTV's impromptu cancellation of the Europe Music Awards in Paris, triggered by the Gaza war. The same channel now faces another setback: the annual Movie & TV Awards event is called off this year. MTV has made no comments on the reason behind this cancellation.
The MTV Movie & TV Awards, famous for their unconventional categories including "Best Kiss" and "Best Fight," have garnered immense popularity since 1992. But, this year, the renowned award show has been cancelled according to"Billboard's" confirmation from an MTV spokesperson. Unfortunately, no explanation has been provided regarding this cancellation. However, MTV assured that it will return in 2025 with a revamped format.
TV networks have started assuming various interpretations due to this cancellation. Last year's MTV Movie & TV Awards, which were beset with challenges, garnered considerable criticism due to a writer's strike in the US. The scheduled presenter, Drew Barrymore, had to call off the show five days before it was scheduled. She was supported by several other scheduled guests who took a public stance in favor of the strikers.
MTV then aired a pre-recorded ceremony, with no presenter, creating a backlash on social media. Many termed it as the "worst awards show ever," as the British Sun reported.
MTV's cancellation of the Movie Awards is not a first. In October, the MTV Europe Music Awards, supposedly scheduled for Paris in 2024, were called off. This cancellation marked the first in the 30-year history of the EMAs. The awards, though, are earmarked to return in 2024, including the U.S. Video Music Awards (VMA) and Europe Music Awards (EMA) held in Manchester this year.
