Miu Miu's Man of the Week is John Cleese.
Last Friday, iconic British comedian John Cleese was spotted sporting a pricey $550 Miu Miu logo cap on a sunny day in London. As a former member of the Monty Python comedy group and the co-creator of the popular British sitcom "Fawlty Towers," Cleese has garnered attention for his fashion choice.
We can't help but wonder about the hat's story. Perhaps Cleese grabbed it hurriedly on his way to a radio show, or was it simply left behind by his model-turned-comedian daughter, Camilla Cleese? Or maybe Cleese is a true Miu Miu fan? Several comedians in the past have had a flair for fashion, like Robin Williams, who favored designs by Jean Paul-Gaultier, Issey Miyake, and Alexander McQueen back in the '90s.
Miu Miu, the sister label to the luxury fashion house Prada, has experienced tremendous success. It's ranked at the top of Lyst's Hottest Brand Index not just once, but twice. This index measures the interested in high-end fashion brands, and Miu Miu's popularity has skyrocketed this year, with a 57% increase in searches. The brand has also seen a significant sales boost in the first quarter of 2024, with a record 89% growth.
Miu Miu determined that Cleese isn't an official brand representative but acknowledged that his choice of hat represented powerful promotion. However, the comedian might be a great addition to the brand's roster. Cleese perfectly encapsulates Miu Miu's mantra of being young and spirited.
Initially perceived as a younger, more playful counterpart to mature Prada, Miu Miu has undergone a branding transformation. Miuccia Prada declared, "I ask myself each morning, 'Am I a 15-year-old girl or a dying lady?'" during the Fall-Winter 2024 show.
Miu Miu has found a sweet spot in catering to both Gen Z influencers (Emma Chamberlain, Ayo Edebiri, and Emma Corrin, to name a few) and those aged 50+. In September, Miu Miu featured 63-year-old British actor Kristen Scott Thomas and 70-year-old Dr Qiu Huilan, a customer-turned-runway model, on the catwalk at Paris Fashion Week. Miu Miu has focused on highlighting youthful excitement, a trait Cleese exudes abundantly (and sometimes messily - thanks to his £17,000 stem cell therapy treatments since 2024).
During an interview with host Chris Evans on Virgin Radio, Cleese reminisced about reuniting with other Monty Python founders Michael Palin and Terry Gilliam. "I called it an 18-foot Python," he said. "It was good to see them again. We're pretty silly. We're disgraceful for our age. Old people are expected to be dignified."
