Maradona's Children File Lawsuit Over Trophy Auction
Soccer legend Diego Maradona is known worldwide. In 1986, his team won the World Cup and he was named Player of the Year. Posthumously, he was awarded a trophy for this achievement. However, this trophy is up for auction in France, and his family is trying to stop it.
Diego Maradona, an Argentinian who passed away in 2020, is being represented in court by lawyer Lola Chunet. She stated, "The family wants to acquire this ball, the Argentinian people want to acquire this ball." The court will decide on May 30 whether the auction can proceed.
The lawyers argue that the latest memento from Maradona's illustrious career, which is projected to fetch millions, should belong to his five heirs. A shirt he wore during the 1986 World Cup sold for $9.3 million in May 2022.
In 1986, Maradona won the World Cup with his team. He was also recognized as the best player in the tournament at the Lido revue theater in Paris. The family believes the trophy was stolen three years later during a bank heist in Naples. The trophy is not the same as the "Ballon d'Or", a prize given by the magazine "France Football" to Europe's top soccer player of the year.
The Family Was Unaware Until Recently
The trophy was assumed to be missing for decades. In 2016, it appeared again at an auction in Paris and was acquired by an antiquities dealer for $500. Maradona's children only learned of the scheduled auction by the Aguttes auction house on June 6 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, near Paris, a few weeks prior.
The auction house denied the claim. The lawyers called the family's claim to the trophy "35 years after an alleged theft" an "opportunistic approach". No charges had ever been filed, and the family did not present any proof of a complaint filed at the time.
