Art Display - "Man and Mining" begins at Völklingen Ironworks' World Cultural Heritage Site.

Starting this Saturday (1st June), the "Man & Mining" exhibition will be held at the World Heritage Site Völklinger Hütte in Saarland, showcasing the global extraction of mineral resources and the impact on both humans and nature. The event is deeply connected to the site's history, as Gerhal Ralf Beil, General Director of Völklingen noted, "Going without the extraction of ore and coal would have meant no ironworks or iron production."

Völklinger Hütte had ceased iron production in July 1986 after lasting for over a century. Interestingly, Völklinger Hütte is the sole ironworks from the industrial era to have survived worldwide and is acknowledged as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994.

This exhibition revolves around a primary concern about human existence: the pursuit of enhancing lives and prosperity by mining and exploiting our planet’s resources, often at the expense of numerous people. It focuses largely on mining in the Global South, showcasing ore, coal, gold, silver, manganese, and lithium used for electric vehicles and electronics like tablets and smartphones.

Featuring photographs, object art, and room installations by artists such as Unknown Fields, Danny Franzreb, Johnny Haglund, Pieter Hugo, and Lu Guang, the exhibition is a collaboration between the World Heritage Site Völklinger Hütte and the Museum of Work in Hamburg. It had a successful run at the latter, with many appreciating it.
