The two-time NBA champion and renowned center player passed away on May 27th at the age of 71 following a long fight with cancer. As per the official statement from the American professional basketball league, Walton passed away surrounded by his family.

Uniqueness and constant smiles

"Bill Walton was an exceptional being," says Adam Silver (62), the current Commissioner of the NBA, in a touching statement. Acknowledged as one of the top players in the league's history, Walton singlehandedly transformed the center position. He boasts two championships, one for Portland Trail Blazers and another for the Boston Celtics, an MVP award for the season, and a MVP title in the finals. In 1993, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Post his playing career, Walton continued to make an impact as an analyst and commentator for various US television networks.

Silver recalls Walton's zeal for life. "Apart from his exceptional talent, he attended all league events, beaming with endless smiles, ready to share his insights and warmth." A close bond existed between the two, and Silver admired Walton's "never-ending energy." His death will be profoundly felt by all who knew and cherished him.

Walton had been a beloved member of the "NBA family" for half a century, leaving behind his spouse Lori and their four sons: Adam, Nate, Luke, and Chris.
