Fury Road: The Mad Max Chronicles - Failed heist attempt at a "Garfield" event

The spin-off movie "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" experienced a slow opening in theatres. It failed to meet the hype and expectations since its premiere in both Germany and the United States.

Lackluster Performance in Germany

In Germany, the post-apocalyptic flick starring Anya Taylor-Joy (28) and Chris Hemsworth (40) struggled to surpass "Garfield - A Whole Extra Helping of Adventure," which has been running in theatres for two weeks. "Furiosa" accrued 86,000 viewers since its release last Thursday. On the other hand, "Garfield" managed to sell 98,000 tickets in the same time frame.

"Blickpunkt: Film" reported that "Furiosa" generated lesser revenue compared to the children's film in Germany. This past weekend marked the weakest box office performance of the year.

Underwhelming Launch in the US on Memorial Day weekend

In the United States, "Furiosa" appears to be turning into a flop, despite its release during a long holiday weekend - Memorial Day. Observed on the last Monday in May, Memorial Day is a time to honour the fallen soldiers in the country.

The prequel to "Mad Max: Fury Road" (2015) earned just $25.6 million in the US by Sunday after its Friday release. Forecasts predicted a total of $50 million for the long weekend, but "Furiosa" might only muster a grand total of $31 million.

Despite its prominent show at the Cannes Film Festival, "Furiosa" barely edged out "Garfield" in the US box office. The "Garfield" movie, which released on the same weekend, raked in $24.8 million by Sunday. The ultimate winner of the Memorial Day weekend will be unveiled on Tuesday, with both movies expected to reach around $31 million.

With either film claiming the Memorial Day weekend crown, it would be the weakest debut since 1995, when "Casper" made a disappointing $22 million. A $168 million movie like "Furiosa" expected much better earnings.
