Starting May, ZDF has been airing season 2 of the television series "Dr. Nice," part of the Herzkino collection. Spanning four 90-minute episodes, the tale follows Dr. Moritz Neiss, a skilled surgeon who ended up in the small town of Stöckersand in Schleswig-Holstein after a car accident that left parts of his right hand immobile. Unknown to him, his teenage daughter Lea lived in the area. Neiss had originally intended to give her up for adoption before heading to Sydney for hand treatment.

Surprising conclusion to season 2 of "Dr. Nice"

The final episode, titled "Heart Flutter," has an unexpected twist. In the closing scene, Dr. Neiss is seen perishing on the operating table. During the season, it looked like Neiss was just beginning to adjust to his new role as a rural physician. That begs the question: why the chaos? Raiser, the series' producer, explained to stern why they made this decisive decision: "Viewers want to be emotionally moved as much as possible. There might be things we didn't see happen in the operating room too..."

ZDF confirmed that a third season would premiere in spring 2025. Dreamtool Entertainment, the production company behind "Dr. Nice," is currently shooting the upcoming episodes in Flensburg. Some scenes will be shot around Berlin until mid-November. While ZDF has not specified an exact date for the third season's broadcast, it's expected next spring.

Raiser outlines additional details, "There will be a greater emphasis on the children of Dr. Florian Schmidtke (played by Maximilian Grill), who is the chief physician at the Förde Clinic and an old friend of Dr. Neiss. Readers will also get to know Dr. Neiss's previously unmentioned brother. Lea, Neiss's daughter, is being taken care of by Charlie (played by Josefine Preuß), who is Neiss's confidante and Lea's adoptive mother. In the next season, Charlie moves on, both professionally and personally. You'll get to see her come out of her period of mourning for her ex-partner and push onward." And viewers will learn more about Dr. Neiss's deceased mother.

More about the third season of "Dr. Nice"

A fresh addition to season 3 is a psychiatrist named Dr. Defrance, portrayed by Hannes Jaenicke. Raiser shares, "Throughout the third season, he turns out to be Dr. Neiss's patient due to a dangerous illness." Jaenicke made time for the production despite a busy schedule. "We're thrilled with the fact that we've managed to attract him. Hannes is one of Germany's rare stars, possessing immense talent, popularity ratings, and renown," praises Raiser.

Fans can follow the filming of the third season on social media, such as Instagram, where Kalupa, the series' lead actor, provides updates from the set. Raiser also encourages following for updates after the last episode on Sunday night: "We plan to divulge more details about what occurred at around 9:46 pm."

The success of the "Dr. Nice" series

"Dr. Nice" has been hugely popular with ZDF viewers since its premiere in the first season, garnering an average viewership of 5.4 million viewers in the prime-time slot. The second-last episode "Shattered Hearts" received 3.71 million viewers last Sunday, equating to 15.4% of the total audience. For comparison, Tatort was the strongest Sunday evening program with 5.66 million viewers and a 23.5% market share.

Producer Raiser attributed the show's success to its captivating storyline. He mentioned in a recent interview that the plan for the third season is to prioritize views in the ZDF media library.

The secret behind the popularity of ZDF's Sunday evening series is revealed by Raiser. He believes that in this chilly and harsh world, we need a dose of kindness. A show that encourages people to bond, value family and relationships, exhibits loyalty, compassion, honor, and ethics can fulfill this need. The lead character played by A Nice is responsible for the success of the show. The character's straightforwardness, lack of political correctness resonates with many viewers. People desire sincerity, gravity, and guilelessness. They seek a battle for sound solutions to daily life issues and consensus rather than mere populism or force-feeding opinions. Furthermore, the protagonist doesn't sugarcoat anything, yet tackles real-world problems honestly and candidly on both ZDF and in real life.

Patrick Kalupa, Josefine Preuß and Maximilian Grill also play together in season 3 (from left).

Television Announcement: "Dr. Nice" will be shown on Sunday, May 26, at 8:15 pm on ZDF.
