These are unsettling pictures: A security video purportedly shows Sean "Diddy" Combs assaulting his former girlfriend in a hotel hallway. People online want him to face consequences. Nonetheless, the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office has now clarified that he cannot be lawfully prosecuted.

Soon after the publication of a horrifying violent video seemingly showing rapper Sean "Diddy" Combs punching his ex-partner Casandra "Cassie" Ventura, the Los Angeles Prosecutor's Office made a response. It explained that Combs cannot be lawfully prosecuted for his assault as a consequence of the statute of limitations in the US state of California.

"We have noticed the video circulating online that supposedly depicts Sean Combs assaulting a woman in Los Angeles," stated George Gascón, the Los Angeles County District Attorney, according to the U.S. publication "Deadline" just a few hours after the U.S. news broadcaster CNN released the security footage.

The District Attorney's Office's announcement, which was also shared on Instagram, continued: "We find the images extremely frightening and difficult to watch. Unfortunately, if the incidents in the video happened in 2016, we can't bring charges because the events occurred beyond the time period in which a felony assault can be prosecuted in California."

In California, the statute of limitations for domestic violence is five years. In contrast, the statute of limitations for simple and aggravated assault is one year and three years, respectively, Deadline notes. Combs' alleged attack on his then-girlfriend Ventura is alleged to have happened on March 5th, 2016, which is over eight years ago.

In the meantime, some well-known people in the U.S. have spoken out on social media and vehemently denounced Combs' purported actions. Rapper 50 Cent, who has had long-standing disputes with Combs, via a series of posts. He posted the viral video shared by CNN on Instagram and mockingly observed, "Well, I'm sure Puffy didn't do it, he's innocent, that doesn't prove anything! This is what his lawyers will assert, God help us all." Then he added praying hands. Model Emily Ratajkowski also voiced her opinion on Instagram, writing plainly, "Monster."
