"Diddy" Combs won't face charges
In a startling turn of events, a surveillance video apparently reveals Sean "Diddy" Combs attacking his ex-girlfriend Cassandra "Cassie" Ventura in a hotel hallway. Netizens are calling for the billionaire rapper's head. However, the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office announced that they cannot legally prosecute him.
Following the release of a horrifying video claiming to show superstar Sean "Diddy" Combs assaulting his former partner Casandra "Cassie" Ventura in a Los Angeles hotel, the LA prosecutor's office has made an official statement. They confirmed that due to the statute of limitations in the state of California, Combs cannot be charged for the alleged assault.
George Gascón, LA County's District Attorney, expressed his consternation in a message to Deadline mere hours after the CNN broadcast aired the shocking footage, saying: "We're conscious of the video circulating online that purportedly depicts Sean Combs beating up a young woman in Los Angeles."
The statement, also shared on Instagram, read: "These images are heart-wrenching and hard to watch. Sadly, if the alleged acts transpired in 2016, we can't prosecute him because the conduct occurred beyond the available time period for felony assault."
In the state of California, the statute of limitations for domestic violence is five years. In contrast, assault charges (both simple and aggravated) are subject to one-year and three-year limitations respectively, Deadline reports. The alleged incident between Combs and Ventura reportedly happened on March 5, 2016.
While the legal systems remain indifferent, celebrities have wasted no time in expressing their disapproval of the alleged violent act. Rapper 50 Cent, who's been locking horns with Combs for a while, posted bitterly on Instagram, sharing the video aired by CNN, "No doubt Puffy didn't do it, he's innocent. This is what his lawyers will say, God help us all." Adding sarcastically, "Praying hands." Supermodel Emily Ratajkowski also shared her thoughts on Instagram, penning a one-word response: "Monster." Despite the outcry from the public and other celebrities, the entertainment industry in Los Angeles faces challenges in prosecuting Sean "Diddy" Combs for the alleged assault due to the statute of limitations on violence-related crimes. The instance of sexual abuse or domestic violence, if proven, would further tarnish the reputation of rap music, a genre that has already been associated with controversy and violence. In light of these events, it's crucial for the industry to reflect on its responsibility in addressing such issues and promoting a safe and respectful environment for all.
