Did men's fashion triumph at the 2024 Met Gala?
Salutes to the party's dress code, JG Ballard's 1962 story "The Garden of Time," were displayed in various forms.
For Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton and actor Nicholas Galitzine, flower motifs appeared on their attire. Hamilton chose Burberry and Galitzine opted for Fendi. They both had embroidered flowers attached to the corners of their jackets, sewed in matching thread. Some other actors went with flower-shaped bowties. Jeremy Strong had a custom, all-white Loro Piana suit with a slight white flower under his high collar. Meanwhile, Jonathan Bailey wore a hand-painted purple, white, and gold peony (made from metal, as he told Vogue, for someone with severe hay fever).
Loewe was a popular choice for many. "Challengers" castmates Mike Faist and Josh O'Connor both donned pieces from the label, which was the film's official outfitter and one of the Met Gala's sponsors. Faist had a crochet turnip brooch on his coat, a wink not only to the event's flower theme but to fashion's fascination with vegetables in general. As for O'Connor, he paired his extended tuxedo with amusing chintz clogs. Comedian Dan Levy's changeable floral two-piece was also from Loewe. So was Jamie Dornan's cozy version of a mourning suit.
A bunch of male attendees represented flower power's intense, masculine side. Usher donned a dark, gloomy ensemble from Alexander McQueen's winter 2021 collection. It boasted a cape and a bleeding rose (which Usher proudly showed off for the cameras). Model Wisdom Kaye looked like he'd risen from the ashes of a phoenix in his romantic Robert Wun suit and overcoat, complete with protruding pleats and rose corsage charred to a crisp. Met Gala host, Bad Bunny, arrived early on the red carpet in a custom Maison Margiela ensemble. His costume included sunglasses, leather gloves, and a bouquet made of the same fabric as his suit. Coleman Domingo also had a full Willy Chavarria suit that he accentuated with black-rimmed eyes and a drooping bunch of disappointed white lilies.
However, not everyone stuck strictly to the theme of flowers for Ballard's story.
Barry Keoghan chose to focus on the idea of haute couture in an aristocratic setting. His old-fashioned Burberry suit had a satin necktie and top hat. Intriguingly, he wore three watches - one for each wrist and one in his pocket, the latter created in the 1930s. Goldblum and his stylist Andrew Vottero were directly inspired by Ballard's protagonist, Count Axel. "(Vottero) knew the story and created this thing with Prada," Goldblum revealed to Vogue host Emma Chamberlain. The actor arrived in what resembled a lavish opera outfit, holding white gloves in one hand, wearing a trailing white scarf, necktie, boxy overcoat, and a dazzling constellation of Tiffany brooches.
A few stars, as always, failed to adhere to the motif or dodged it altogether. Taika Waititi opted for a full leather suit, while Eddie Redmayne could have unveiled the first-ever naked suit in the same outfit as his wife.
Yet, one fact remains certain: after this night, tailoring will never be the same.

After observing the diverse fashion choices at the 2024 Met Gala, one cannot deny that Burberry and Fendi showcased their unique styles in flower-themed attire, with Burberry's Hamilton sporting embroidered flowers and Fendi's Galitzine wearing a coat adorned with flower motifs.
Furthermore, the theme of flowers was not limited to designer labels; even those opting for non-floral attire, such as Barry Keoghan in his Burberry suit with satin necktie and top hat, demonstrated their own distinctive styles.
