Suggestion for TV viewing - Debased: The Arte series "Although I Love You"
Rebecca (Clotilde Hesme) and Romain (Jérémie Renier) could be amazing parents together. But, for the past two years, their efforts to conceive a child have been fruitless. Rebecca feels used by her husband, a sensitive general practitioner, who only returns home on her fertile days to have sex. It's heartbreaking, and she tells Romain just that.
The atmosphere isn't exactly cheerful when Romain's younger brother Michel (Finnegan Oldfield) drops by for a family dinner. Michel boasts about how he's about to be a father. He's an actor, a drug addict, and a thief. His pregnant girlfriend Emilie (Majda Abdelmalek) spills red wine and smokes a lit cigarette. The humiliation must be excruciating for Rebecca. She remains silent throughout.
In the gripping three-part thriller "If I Love You", airing on Arte May 30th at 9:40 p.m., the situation gets much worse. Michel temps his girlfriend into getting into the trunk of her car in front of everyone. The next day, Emilie disappears.
Rebecca thinks the worst has happened - Michel could have harmed Emilie. But Michel shuns all questions from the family and police. After the investigators leave, a fierce altercation between the brothers ensues, resulting in tragedy for one of them. Rebecca also becomes a player in the fight for life and death. However, this is just the start of the tangled story.
The screenplay for the 2019 mini-series was written by Mathias Gokalp in collaboration with Florent Meyer ("In the Skin of the Other") and novelist Ingrid Desjours. Leading the cast is Clotilde Hesme, who won the César for Best Newcomer in 2012 for "Angele and Tony" and is familiar to TV audiences for her role in the series "The Returned". Playing against her is accomplished Belgian actor Jérémie Renier, known for performances in works like François Ozon's "The Other Lover" (2017).
This intense, disturbing drama requires a lot from viewers with its physical and emotional brutality. But it offers keen insights into relationships and presents a warped narrative that only gets more convoluted. As it becomes increasingly clear that it's not just the brothers who have bodies buried in their cellar, this show is a must-watch.
