Chris Pine discusses his previous battle with acne, sympathizing with the distress it can cause.

On a recent episode of the "Happy Sad Confused" podcast, Pine discussed his teenage years and college, mentioning that he had extremely bad skin during that time. He was bothered by the perception that only teenagers experience acne, as it was "tremendously debilitating and extremely emotionally crippling" for him.

The conversation was sparked by Josh Horowitz, the podcast host, asking Pine about Patrick Rush's comments in Alan Sepinwall's 2023 book "Welcome to The O.C.: The Oral History". Rush, the show's casting director, shared that Pine had auditioned for the role of Ryan Atwood in the series but was rejected due to his "incredibly bad skin". The role was eventually given to Ben McKenzie, who played Atwood from 2003 to 2007.

Pine remarked that Rush "didn't have to talk about it" in the book. He acknowledged that the producers wanted attractive characters but added that he wouldn't express gratitude for not landing that role.

Pine now has a thriving career in Hollywood, having played Captain Kirk in the revamped "Star Trek" movies and appearing in popular flicks like "Don't Worry Darling" and "Hell or High Water". He still remembers the challenges he faced and how low they dragged him.

"I know how depressing it can be and the depths of sorrow it can take you to," he said. "But there's a brighter day."

In conclusion, Pine's struggle with acne during his youth had a significant impact on him. Despite being passed over for a role in "The O.C.", he went on to succeed in Hollywood as a prominent actor. He hasn't forgotten the emotional aspect of his journey and recognizes the potential for a brighter future.
