Charles the King pays tribute to himself.
Recently, King Charles III has begun making appearances again. This marks a scale of showing tribute after having received a reprieve from his fight with cancer. Within the last two weeks, he has presented an award to the Archbishop of Canterbury and released his first official portrait since being crowned.
This painting, created by artist Jonathan Yeo, was commissioned back in 2020 in celebration of Charles' 50th anniversary as a member of Draper's Company, an ancient corporation made up of merchants now focused on charitable work. The artwork features Charles donning the uniform of the Welsh Guards while adorned with medals. His hands rest on a pistol.
While most of the painting depicts a red veil covering his face and hands, a butterfly hovers over his right shoulder. Charles requested this detail to highlight his affection for environmental preservation.
The artwork will be exhibited at the Philip Mould Gallery in London from May 16th through June 14th, with free admission. It will later reside in Draper's Hall permanently starting at the end of August.
A Lively Impression
Earlier in the day, Charles made a lively impression during the first medal ceremony since his cancer diagnosis became public. According to the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, Charles appeared in "high spirits" and seemed "very well" after receiving the Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order for his role in Welby's coronation ceremony. The archbishop prefers not to use the title "Sir" as a clergyman.
In early February, Buckingham Palace announced that Charles was experiencing cancer. Following his diagnosis, he underwent outpatient treatment and largely retreated from the public eye. In late April, however, it was reported that his treatment was showing progression, allowing him to resume attending some public appointments.
Just before May, Charles transferred one of his military titles to his successor, Prince William. He passed on his honorary command of the Army Air Corps, which he had held for approximately 30 years, to his oldest son. Now, Prince William holds the position as Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps.
