Heinz Hoenig is an individual in question. - Actor now in coma for second time.

Since actor Heinz Hoenig ("Das Boot", 72) was admitted to the hospital with life-threatening complications in early May, his wife Annika Kärsten-Hoenig (39) has been going through the toughest time of her life. Doctors discovered a bacterial infection that had spread through his entire aorta, damaging a stent implanted several years ago. Additionally, a hole in his esophagus was found, which had to be covered during the first operation.

In-depth Health Update on RTL

Following Hoenig's successful esophageal surgery, Kärsten-Hoenig initially appeared relieved and hopeful. On May 30th, however, she announced on the RTL program "Punkt 7" that a planned aorta operation had to be postponed due to her husband's worsening condition. Several hours later, she provided a detailed update on his current state in an interview with "Punkt 12" - and shared heartfelt glimpses into her own emotional turmoil.

Actor awakes from artificial coma

"I'm hanging on," she bravely noted. "I believe that one just functions. Right now, you're not living, you're functioning." Recently, the doctors had to put her husband back into an artificial coma, from which he's been partially waking up for the past two days. "He's partly conscious, partly asleep," Kärsten-Hoenig explained. "But he's currently fully intubated."

Her two children, Juliano (3) and Jianni (1), are surprisingly adapting to this challenging scenario, as shared by the trained nurse and educator in her conversation with the broadcaster. "The older one is dealing with the situation well and has no fear of technology," said the concerned mother. "The younger one sees his father's image, then laughs and says 'Daddy!'".

"You're furious and want to yell"

Dealing with her husband's critical illness is not easy for Kärsten-Hoenig, but she tries not to show it to her children. "You're furious and want to yell," she described. "But where would I yell? I can't yell in the hospital, in front of the children is also not possible, in the car is also not feasible - that's challenging."

There are only two choices: either give up or fight. And neither she nor Hoenig would ever give up.

Soul-wrenching hospital routine

Kärsten-Hoenig finished her report with a deeply emotional account of her current hospital routine. If her husband is conscious, she reads his favorite book "The Little Buddha" to him, which the actor used to read to his sons before bedtime. "I bought another book in Berlin, one we didn't have yet, called 'The Little Buddha on the Journey Home,'" she shared. "And I told Heinz, 'I'll read this to you, because one day, and we must believe in this, we'll be back home again.'"
