- Engrossing crime drama emphasizing the personal connections of detective Cris Blohm
What's the topic?
"Police Call 110" in Munich - A Summer Romance Turns into a Criminal Investigation with an Unlikely Love Story
After a fire in a former administrative building, a female body is discovered. The identity of the victim remains a mystery to Inspector Cris Blohm (Johanna Wokalek) and her partner Dennis Eden (Stephan Zinner) at first. The property is owned by the Hechtle family from Munich, who have amassed great wealth through their car rental company. It has been an ongoing issue for patriarch Georg Hechtle and his children Sandro and Gioia to obtain a demolition permit, which the Hechtles may have finally acquired for financial gain, instigating what is known as a "warm demolition." Security guard Andreas Busch (Gerhard Wittmann) finds the fire and appears to know more than he shares with the police. Cris Blohm and Dennis Eden are aided in their investigation by arson investigator Hanno Senoner (Golo Euler). Despite the fact that Eden despises Senoner, calling him a "slimeball" and a "douchebag," Senoner later makes a pass at Blohm, creating tension.
What makes it worthwhile?
Screenwriter and director Alexander Adolph and his team have created a cinematically dense piece. The vividly staged fire and other memorable moments, such as a bird's eye view of a suburban housing estate where another crime is unfolding, are noteworthy. A scene featuring Blohm imaginatively visualizing the crime scene is particularly striking.
What's troubling?
The romantic storyline between Cris Blohm and Hanno Senoner often overshadows the case. It's evident from the outset that it won't conclude harmoniously, diminishing some of the suspense. Socio-critical themes that would align with "Polizeiruf 110" are left unexplored. For instance, the precarious circumstances of the deceased woman's job and the Hechtle family's solution to problems and crimes through money. These aspects could have been delved into further.
The characters?
This marks the second team-up of Cris Blohm and Dennis Eden, the investigative duo from Munich. While they are distinct from one another, their chemistry and humor make them engaging to watch. Blohm is a sharp-minded detective who quickly uncovers connections, while Eden is a gruff, seasoned inspector with a hot temper. He describes his rages as "good for me" when he confronts Blohm. The dynamic between the two has a more delightful quality compared to predecessor Bessie Eyckhoff (Verena Altenberger), whose cases were darker and more somber.
Should you watch it?
As "Tatort" and "Polizeiruf 110" go on summer hiatus, it's the final new episode. UEFA Euro 2020 and the Summer Olympics will dominate the television schedule, so if you're craving some fresh crime drama, make sure to tune in before the break.
