Zverev possibly seriously injured: Olympics in danger?

Alexander Zverev's knee injury at Wimbledon Classics might be more severe. A doctor visit in Monaco is expected to bring clarity - including his participation in the Olympics. Zverev is the defending champion in Paris.

Alexander Zverev might have suffered a more serious injury than initially diagnosed at Wimbledon and could potentially miss the Olympics in Paris (from July 26). The Olympic champion will be examined again at his home in Monaco on Wednesday, reported Zverev's brother and manager Mischa on Prime Video: "If it's a bone fracture in the bone or a tear or whatever, then we have to look at how long it takes, but then the Olympics are in danger."

Zverev lost in the quarterfinals against Taylor Fritz and had fallen in the previous round against Cameron Norrie. The initial diagnosis was bone marrow edema and capsule rupture. On Tuesday, the 27-year-old went to the doctor again, according to Mischa Zverev: "About 40 milliliters of fluid and blood were removed from the knee." There is "a suspicion of something worse."

Perhaps it's "more than a bone marrow edema," and "detailed images" of the knee are expected to be taken in Monaco to provide clarity. Zverev was handicapped during his loss to Fritz. "I played with unfathomable amounts of painkillers," said the fourth-ranked player. His goal is to play in Paris: "And win and carry the flag. I have three weeks, that will be enough."

There are just 19 days between his elimination at the popular grass-grand-slam tournament in Southwest London and the opening match in the Olympic competitions at Stade Roland Garros on July 27. "Three weeks is more than enough time," Zverev predicted after his bitter exit. "Except I'm not that smart and I'll lift 300 kg of weights and ruin my knee tomorrow."

Despite the potential severity of his knee injury, Zverev expressed his determination to defend his Olympic title in Paris. However, the danger of missing the Olympics due to his injury looms, as suggested by his brother Mischa. The ongoing concern stems from the suspicion of a more serious issue than initially diagnosed, such as a bone fracture or tear.
