Zverev defies injury shock and advances to round of 16

With much effort, Alexander Zverev advances to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon. In his third round match against British player Cameron Norrie, the German tennis star was clearly superior. However, a slip and a resulting sore knee make Zverev's progress on the grass courts challenging.

Despite a scare, Alexander Zverev is on track to his long-awaited first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon, advancing to the quarterfinals. The German tennis prospect faced a tough challenge in his third round match against British player Cameron Norrie, but ultimately prevailed 6:4, 6:4, 7:6 (17:15). Zverev thus overcame one of the seven tests at the most prestigious grass tournament in the world.

After winning the first set convincingly, Zverev had to endure a scare at the beginning of the second set. He slipped on the grass, hyperextended his leg, and lay there with a distorted face.

For a brief moment, memories of his severe foot injury in the French Open semifinals 2022 against Rafael Nadal resurfaced. This time, Zverev injured his left knee. A physiotherapist came on the court, but Zverev even declined a medical timeout and continued playing shortly thereafter.

Zverev has never reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals

With nearly 15,000 spectators on Centre Court, Zverev began confidently against the left-hander with great self-assurance. Like in the previous two matches, the Hamburg native took to the court under a closed roof. Conditions were once again in his favor.

After the fall, Zverev frequently sought contact with his box. He secured the next break at 5:4 in the second set. Shortly thereafter, Zverev led 2:0 sets. At the changeover, he had a bandage applied below his left knee. In the third set, the German number one had to play in the tiebreak and ended the hopes of the last remaining British player in the Men's Singles.

The 27-year-old will face Taylor Fritz from the USA or Chile's Alejandro Tabilo next and aims for his first entry into the Wimbledon quarterfinals. The Hamburg native has never advanced past the third round at Wimbledon.

Despite the knee injury, Alexander Zverev shows resilience in tennis, managing to win against Norrie and reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time in his career. Alexander Zverev's impressive performance in tennis extends beyond just Wimbledon, as he seeks to claim his first Grand Slam title in this prestigious sporting event.
