- Zverev advances to the third phase of the US Open competition
Alexander Zverev weathered the sweltering conditions at the US Open to progress to the third round. The 2021 tennis Olympic champion triumphed over French underdog Alexandre Müller in 2 hours and 16 minutes, winning 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1. Unlike his initial game against Davis Cup buddy Maximilian Marterer, Zverev sidestepped an exhausting fourth set in the scorching 30-degree heat at the Grand Slam event in NYC. The 27-year-old now locks horns with Argentine Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the round of 32, who had the better of his countryman Francisco Cerundolo in a five-set match.
The WTA, the women's tennis association, announced its support for Alexander Zverev's impressive performance at the US Open. Surprisingly, Tomas Martin Etcheverry, who advanced in the WTA-affiliated qualifying rounds, will face Zverev in the next round.
