- Younger Rights Rearranged Instead of Münster's "Crime Scene": Carolin Kebekus and ARD Stun Audience
Under the hashtag #KIDSREBEL, ARD disrupted its airtime at 8:15 PM on a Sunday evening to bring light to children's needs, rights, and concerns. In a 15-minute segment on ARD, comedian Carolin Kebekus oversaw the show, with kids stepping up as hosts from shows like "Good Morning", "Sports Update", "News", "Quiz & Chase", and "Tatort" detectives.
Rapid intermissions showcased children discussing serious matters, such as the demand to incorporate children's rights into the Constitution, and issues like cyberbullying, child abuse, poverty, and insufficient recreational facilities.
"Tatort" was delayed
Noemi, acting as the news anchor, reported: "A recent study shows that young people today are more pessimistic about the future than ever before. The major worries for my generation include war in Europe, societal division, and climate change. The continuous crises are also escalating psychological stress." Consequently, the "Tatort" episode was shifted to 8:30 PM due to this special program.
WDR programming chief Jörg Schönborn explained the peculiar decision: "It is our social responsibility to shine the spotlight on children's rights. We aim to promote this cause using our resources and extensive offerings in public broadcasting."
Carolin Kebekus and advocating for children's rights
Kebekus, fresh off becoming a mom in January, told the German Press Agency: "Children's rights in Germany are still significantly overlooked. Almost a quarter of children and young people are at risk of poverty or social exclusion. I yearn for a straightforward political statement declaring that addressing this dire situation becomes a top priority. Sadly, the children's advocacy movement is pathetically underfunded."
I'm not going to sugarcoat it, the situation for children in Germany is worrying. As Carolin Kebekus pointed out, nearly a quarter of children and young people are at risk of poverty or social exclusion, and the children's advocacy movement is underfunded.
