World champion Theis is on the verge of redemption

In the summer, Daniel Theis was one of the guarantors of Germany's World Cup title, but back in the NBA he is on the sidelines with the Indiana Pacers. Now there seems to be a way out for the center: The Pacers are preparing to terminate his contract. A new team has apparently already been chosen.

Los Angeles instead of Indiana: Basketball world champion Daniel Theis is apparently on the verge of a move within the NBA. According to US media reports, the center will terminate his contract with the Pacers and then sign with the Clippers.

Theis was sent from the Boston Celtics to Indiana last summer as part of a player swap and was also unable to gain a foothold there due to knee surgery in November 2022. After his return in February of this year, he only played seven games in the past NBA season.

The picture has not changed in the current season either, with Theis only appearing against the Milwaukee Bucks (126:124), where he played eight minutes. The 31-year-old was absent from Tuesday's win at the Philadelphia 76ers (132:126) "for personal reasons", although he had traveled with the team to the away game. In the summer, the center was still one of the guarantors of the World Cup title in Asia.

A possible transfer makes sense not only for the German international, but also for both clubs: while Indiana is increasingly focusing on young players as part of its rebuild, the Clippers are looking for a replacement for their injured backup center Mason Plumlee.

Should Theis play for the Clippers in future, however, he would have to accept a significantly lower salary: The center is earning 9.1 million dollars (around 8.4 million euros) with the Pacers this season, and there is also a club option for an additional year, which would earn him an additional 9.5 million dollars. In Los Angeles, however, Theis could only sign for the minimum salary - which is still a good two million US dollars.

The NBA center Daniel Theis, who helped Germany win the World Cup, is reportedly leaving the Indiana Pacers and considering joining the Los Angeles Clippers. Despite earning a substantial salary with the Pacers, Theis might agree to a lower wage with the Clippers to secure a spot in the team.
