Women's DFB hands Hrubesch a lavish dilemma.
Only 18 women footballers can be selected by the national coach Horst Hrubesch for the Olympics, which makes the upcoming match against Poland both an exciting game and a casting session for the Paris tournament. The position of the goalkeeper is still up for grabs, with Hrubesch indicating that all three are capable of securing the starting spot.
Just days before making the trip from New York to Frankfurt, national team goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger shared a heartfelt announcement in her social media. Engaged to English national player Jess Carter, Berger posed with the iconic Statue of Liberty in the background and wrote, "My best trophy so far."
Aside from the personal joy, the 33-year-old goalkeeper has a lot to look forward to. Hrubesch has yet to settle on the 'T-question,' a title he uses to refer to the decision about the starting goalkeeper for the Olympics. In a matter-of-fact statement, Hrubesch explained why he won't make a decision right away. "There are no sure things with me," he said. "If tomorrow one is injured and another becomes available, why should I decide?"
This level of uncertainty means that Merle Frohms, who plays for VfL Wolfsburg and participated in the previous two major tournaments, is no longer guaranteed her spot as the starting goalkeeper. Both she and Berger played in recent EM qualification matches, Frohms in the 3:2 win in Austria and Berger in the match against Iceland that ended 3:1. The third goalkeeper in the national team is Stina Johannes from Eintracht Frankfurt, a budding talent who has yet to earn any caps for Germany. She could potentially make her debut in one of the upcoming qualifying matches against Poland on July 8th in Rostock or on July 12th in Gdynia.
After these qualifiers, the coach will have to choose two out of the three keepers to represent Germany in France. "I'm happy and grateful that I have three excellent goalkeepers," Hrubesch said. "I'm thrilled that I can choose between Merle Frohms, with her tournament experience and playing with the national team, and Stina Johannes, who is brimming with potential."
