The German women's 3x3 basketball team is on the verge of direct semifinal qualification in their Olympic debut. With a 14:13 win against France in their sixth group game, the team led by the German Basketball Federation secured the top spot in the standings. A victory against Spain on Saturday (6 PM) would guarantee their place in the final four. The team had already secured their spot in the play-in round after their 18:15 win against China earlier in the day.
The team's alarm went off at 6 AM, but they showed no signs of fatigue against China, pulling off a strong finish to secure the win. "We make excellent decisions towards the end, and we still have more power than other teams," explained Svenja Brunckhorst.
Loud Crowd Against France
Against the group's last-placed team, France, the German team initially struggled with their finishing, appearing nervous in front of the loud crowd. However, Sonja Greinacher sealed the narrow victory with a late shot.
The German team had already made a strong start to the tournament with wins against co-favorites USA and Canada. The top two teams from the eight-team group advance directly to the semifinals, while teams ranked third to sixth compete in a play-in round for the remaining two semifinal spots.
3x3 basketball, a variant of streetball, has gained popularity in recent years and was included in the Olympic program for the first time in 2021. The German team was not present at the time, with the USA winning the women's title. Games are played on a single hoop, with three players from each four-player team on the court at a time.
Despite the intimidating atmosphere created by the loud crowd, the German team managed to overcome their initial weaknesses against France.
