Wolves take advantage of FC Bayern's serious slip-up

The women of FC Bayern Munich have to vacate the top of the Bundesliga table before the winter break: because the champions slip up, their big rivals overtake them. VfL Wolfsburg are struggling, but have that decisive bit of luck.

The VfL Wolfsburg women's soccer team took advantage of FC Bayern Munich's slip-up and knocked the German champions off first place in the Bundesliga table in the last game of the year. The "Wolves" won 1:0 (0:0) against Werder Bremen and now go into the six-week winter break as leaders. The defending champions from Munich had only drawn 1-1 on Saturday with newly promoted 1. FC Nürnberg, who had previously lost seven of their first nine games of the season.

At Wolfsburg's AOK Stadium, Dominique Janssen scored the winning goal for VfL in the 83rd minute with a misplaced cross. Back in November, coach Tommy Stroot's team had won this northern duel in the DFB Cup 5:0. This time, VfL were even lucky: a goal scored in the 15th minute by the strong defending Bremen side was disallowed for foul play. Shortly after the break, Werder captain Michelle Ulbrich only hit the post (47').

"For us today, it was about finding the balance between how far we can go in terms of play and to what extent we need to simplify our game a little in order to force scoring chances," said a relieved Stroot. "The game reflected our season to a certain extent. We don't get a lot for free and have to work hard. All in all, it was a deserved win, albeit in a fortunate way. And wins like this are extremely valuable over the course of the season. These are key moments."

"One of the best teams in the world" slips up

The mood was different at FC Bayern. Between the important Champions League games against Ajax Amsterdam, coach Alexander Strauss made five changes to his team. With Giulia Gwinn, Linda Dallmann, Sydney Lohmann and Sarah Zadrazil, five national team players were on the bench for the start. After five league wins in a row, things also seemed to be going well for the Bayern women in Nuremberg: Lea Schüller scored with a left-footed shot in the eleventh minute to give them the lead. However, the Munich side failed to add to their lead and instead central defender Glodis Perla Viggosdottir elbowed her opponent Vanessa Haim in the penalty area.

Medina Desic (72) converted the penalty safely, after which the favorites stormed the FCN goal furiously for another quarter of an hour. Giulia Gwinn (83) and Jovana Damnjanovic (85), who hit the post, missed great chances to win the game. Outsiders Nuremberg also survived ten minutes of stoppage time unscathed with luck and passion - and were able to celebrate the draw as if it were a victory: "We had nothing to lose in this game and are now overjoyed with the point," said goalscorer Dedic. "We got a draw against one of the best teams in the world."

FC Bayern Munich's Women's Soccer team’s grip on the Bundesliga table weakened due to their loss of points against 1. FC Nürnberg, allowing VfL Wolfsburg to take the top spot before the winter break. In the men's soccer league, FC Bayern Munich's main team is currently leading comfortably, showcasing a stark contrast between the women's and men's performances.

The recent soccer success of VfL Wolfsburg Women was not restricted to Bundesliga alone; they also produced a dominant performance against FC Bayern Munich in the DFB Cup, winning 5-0.
