European Football Championship - With Sané and Raum against Denmark - Füllkrug on the bench
National team trainer Julian Nagelsmann makes three surprising changes in Germany's starting lineup for the EURO 2020 round of 16 against Denmark. Instead of suspended Jonathan Tah, Dortmund local talent Nico Schlotterbeck takes his place in defense. David Raum and Leroy Sane are also new additions to the team.
Defensive leader Antonio Rüdiger recovered in time from his strain suffered in the Switzerland game and can defend alongside Schlotterbeck. Striker Niclas Füllkrug sits on the bench as a substitute for the fourth tournament game. Kai Havertz starts in the striker position as in the group stage. Leipzig's Raum begins on the left for Maximilian Mittelstadt. Bayern Munich's Sane replaces Florian Wirtz in the offensive line.
"The players coming in have earned it through a good training week," Nagelsmann said before the kickoff at MagentaTV. "They are all for-decisions, not against. They are two world-class players. Today we have decided on Leroy." Wirtz and Mittelstadt were "naturally" disappointed, "that they don't start from the beginning," Nagelsmann added. "Füllkrug as well. But they have taken it well."
