Lord Robert Fellowes has passed away. The uncle of Prince William and Prince Harry has died at the age of 82. He served as the private secretary to Queen Elizabeth II for nine years (1926-2022) and was the husband of Lady Jane Spencer (67), the sister of Princess Diana (1961-1997). Diana's brother Charles Spencer (60) confirmed Fellowes' death in a post on X and wrote about a picture from an article in "The Times": "My wonderful brother-in-law Robert is no longer with us. He was a true gentleman in the best sense of the word, a man of humor, wisdom, and absolute integrity. I am very proud to have been his brother-in-law."
Discreet Advisor to the Queen
According to "The Telegraph", Fellowes died on July 29 for unknown reasons. He was born in 1941 as the son of the estate manager of Sandringham, one of his first visitors was said to be the young Princess Elizabeth, who later said: "Robert is the only one of my private secretaries that I held in my arms." He attended Eton College and was a member of the British Army from 1960 to 1963. After stints in the private sector, he became assistant private secretary to the late Queen in 1977.
In 1986, he was appointed deputy private secretary and in 1990, he became the private secretary. He held this position until 1999, serving the Royal Family during some of its most tumultuous years. He was known as one of the most loyal and discreet advisors to the Queen. In 1989, he was appointed Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order and in 1998, he was elevated to Knight Grand Cross. He married Lady Jane Spencer in Westminster in April 1978, with Princess Diana as a bridesmaid. They had three children together.
