Will Gündogan potentially step into Ronaldo's shoes in the near future?
Following his departure from the German national football team, speculations have arisen about Ilkay Gündogan's future with FC Barcelona. According to reports by Sky, Barcelona's leadership has advised the midfielder to seek a new club during this transfer window.
As per a report in "AS", the new manager, Hansi Flick, who has worked with Gündogan in the German national team, does not consider him as a regular starter. Flick reportedly communicated this to the club's sporting director, Deco, suggesting that Gündogan does not fit into his tactical approach.
Gündogan missed Barcelona's opening game against Valencia last Saturday due to a cut wound sustained during the friendly against AS Monaco, which ended in a 0-3 defeat. Flick later stated that he believed Gündogan would remain with the club and expressed his high esteem for the 33-year-old.
Possible Moves to Saudi Arabia or Manchester City
Barcelona is reportedly looking to generate funds through the transfer of Gündogan, given their financial constraints and the need for fresh signings. The Spanish football giant is also grappling with the under-registration of Dani Olmo, who was acquired from RB Leipzig for €55 million, and the imminent signing of Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao. The Arabic portal "365scores" has reportedly suggested that Barcelona has propositioned Gündogan to Al-Nassr, Cristiano Ronaldo's club in Saudi Arabia.
The midfielder's agent and uncle, Ilhan, announced on August 8 that despite interests from several clubs, Gündogan is determined to continue his tenure at Barcelona. His contract with the Catalan giants runs until the summer of 2026, after joining the club on a free transfer from Manchester City in 2023.
There are possibilities of Gündogan returning to Manchester City, according to Sky. The report claims that City is contemplating the possibility of bringing him back to the club. Gündogan enjoyed a successful seven-year stint at City, helping the team win five English league titles and one Champions League title under Pep Guardiola.
Despite his determination to stay at Barcelona, Gündogan's future at the club seems uncertain due to financial constraints and tactical considerations. With Manchester City showing interest, Gündogan might consider returning to the Premier League and rejoining the team where he had a successful seven-year stint, playing soccer under Pep Guardiola.
