Wild spectacle puts Man United in serious trouble

English record champions Manchester United are struggling to progress in the Champions League and are now even threatened with a complete collapse: the former European Cup winners led twice in the important match in Istanbul, but it was not enough to win. Things are even worse for Sevilla FC.

The English soccer record champions Manchester United carelessly squandered a big step towards the knockout round of the Champions League. Team manager Erik ten Hag's side gave away a two-goal lead in the cauldron of Galatasaray Istanbul, partly due to serious mistakes by goalkeeper Andre Onana, and could not get past 3:3 (2:1).

The Turks thus moved up to second place in Group A for the time being and have progression in their own hands ahead of the final matchday. Man United, on the other hand, must defeat German record champions Bayern Munich, who have already been confirmed as group winners, at Old Trafford on December 12 and hope for some help from their opponents if they are to stay in the top flight this winter. However, a defeat against the German record champions could also spell the end of the season on the European stage.

Argentinian Alejandro Garnacho (11), captain Bruno Fernandes (18) and Scott McTominay (55) scored Manchester's goals. However, Hakim Ziyech (29/62) reduced the deficit twice with direct free-kicks, with ManU goalkeeper Onana looking poor on both occasions. Kerem Aktürkoglu (71') finally equalized for the Turks and set up an exciting final phase, Bruno Fernandes (85') hit the post.

Anniversary goal does not save Sevilla

Europa League winners Sevilla FC no longer have a chance of reaching the round of 16. The Andalusians surrendered a two-goal lead at PSV Eindhoven in the second half while short-handed and lost 2:3 (1:0) after conceding a late goal through former Augsburg player Ricardo Pepi (90.+2).

After Lucas Ocampos was sent off (yellow-red, 66'), Ismael Saibari (68') and Nemanja Gudelj (82') equalized for the Dutch side, coached by former Bundesliga coach Peter Bosz. Sevilla had previously taken the lead through Sergio Ramos (24), who scored the 10,000th goal in Champions League history, and Youssef En-Nesyri (47).
