"Highlander" - When will the shoot finally start?

A "Highlander" reboot with "The Witcher" star Henry Cavill (41) is set to be filmed, this was first announced approximately three years ago. However, fans will still have to wait a while longer before the film finally hits the big screen. At least it's now clear when the shootings will begin.

During the Mediterranea Film Festival in Malta, "John Wick" and "Highlander" chief Chad Stahelski (55) revealed to the entertainment portal "Collider" that it should start in about half a year. "We begin filming in January in Scotland," Stahelski said. He is traveling to Scotland right after the festival to scout possible shooting locations.

More than just sword fights

Although he has concerns about the potentially dangerous stunts and the work involved for the cast and crew, he is also concerned about how engaging the new fantasy-action will be for female and male viewers.

"A three-minute sword fight can be a bit tedious," Stahelski admitted. "Would I bore you with a sword fight film?", is one of his thoughts. "And how do I scatter guns, martial arts, and chase scenes in, and what part does the story [of the film] take? I still have to figure that out." The film won't be "The Bride of the Prince," "Tiger and Dragon," "Master & Commander," or "Zorro." "What's this new look of action or sword fighting that people could be excited about? That keeps me awake at night," he said.

"Highlander" in planning for years

In May 2021, industry website "Deadline" first reported that Cavill was in negotiations for one of the lead roles in a "Highlander" reboot from the 1986 classic. Stahelski was already linked to the project as director at that time.

In January 2024, it was officially announced that Stahelski would also be the new "Highlander" boss. At that time, Lionsgate announced that the action specialist would make creative decisions for both renowned franchises in the future.

Following the announcement at the Mediterranea Film Festival in Malta, director Chad Stahelski revealed that the "Highlander" reboot with Henry Cavill will begin filming in January 2023 in Scotland. Despite the challenges of intricate stunts and engaging the audience, Stahelski is eager to introduce a fresh take on action and sword fighting. The film, set to be more than just sword fights, has been in planning for several years with Cavill and Stahelski attached to the project.
