100 milliliters per bottle - that used to be the limit for liquids in hand luggage. At many airports in Europe, this rule is now a thing of the past.

New rules for hand luggage - What you should bear in mind during your summer vacation at the airport

Traveling with light luggage – it sounds like a real time-saver at first. Especially in the summer, when the check-in lines for luggage at the airport get longer and temperatures rise. However, traveling with hand luggage also has its drawbacks – the entire summer wardrobe may not fit well in the backpack that is allowed by many airlines. Typical is, above all, the strict regulations for carrying liquids, especially by budget airlines like Wizzair, Ryanair, and Eurowings, which have a maximum size of 56 cm × 45 cm × 25 cm.

While this limits the total amount of luggage, there have been significant relaxations in another area for all friends of hand luggage: Many airports are now relaxing the previously strict rules for carrying liquids. Specifically, airports, thanks to new analysis technology, are ending the 100-milliliter limit for liquids. This has limited the carrying of liquids so far to containers of 100 milliliters, and a total of one liter can be taken into hand luggage in a transparent plastic bag.

New Security Technology Across Europe

This rule is now supposed to be lifted at several airports by a new scanner. It allows 3D images of the luggage to be made during security checks, which should then be recognizable with the help of Artificial Intelligence whether it is a explosive, alcohol, or harmless cosmetics. Passengers are now allowed to carry up to two liters in hand luggage, in any size containers.

The fun comes at a price: Airports pay around 500,000 Euros for the conversion to this new technology. Therefore, the list of airports implementing this rule is expected to grow gradually, and it already applies at the following airports:

  • Düsseldorf
  • Munich
  • Stuttgart
  • Hamburg
  • Berlin
  • Cologne/Bonn
  • Barcelona
  • Madrid
  • Palma de Mallorca
  • Helsinki
  • Schiphol (Amsterdam)
  • Eindhoven
  • London City Airport
  • London-Heathrow (from summer)
  • Dublin
  • Paris-Orly
  • Fiumicino and Leonardo da Vinci (Rome)
  • Malpensa (Milan)
  • Geneva
  • Shannon

Hand Luggage at the Airport: What's Allowed

Whoever travels with hand luggage should, however, also consider some things beyond the liquid limits. For example, razors and sharp objects such as knives, scissors, and nail clippers cannot be carried, and electronic devices should be removed from the backpack during security checks. Whoever is traveling with medication should ideally carry the corresponding prescription to avoid having to explain to the security personnel. Prohibited are also anything that can ignite, fireworks, tools, and of course any type of weapons.

  1. With the relaxation of liquid rules at several European airports, travelers can now carry up to two liters of liquid in hand luggage, thanks to new 3D scanners and AI technology.
  2. Budget airlines like Ryanair, Eurowings, and Wizz Air, which previously had strict regulations on carrying liquids, will now benefit from these changes, allowing passengers to carry larger volumes of liquids in hand luggage.
  3. Düsseldorf, Munich, Stuttgart, Hamburg, Berlin, Cologne/Bonn, Barcelona, Madrid, Palma de Mallorca, Helsinki, Schiphol (Amsterdam), Eindhoven, London City Airport, London-Heathrow, Dublin, Paris-Orly, Fiumicino and Leonardo da Vinci (Rome), Malpensa (Milan), Geneva, and Shannon are some of the airports that have implemented this new technology, allowing passengers to carry more liquid in hand luggage.
  4. While traveling with hand luggage can save time at the airport during summer vacation, it's essential to remember that certain items, such as razors, sharp objects, and medications without prescriptions, are still not allowed in hand luggage.
