Online paying - What will change for PayPal customers soon

PayPal has announced improvements to its Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) process to optimize the login experience for its customers. These measures primarily affect users who had already implemented independent security measures before the mandatory introduction of 2FA under the EU Payments Services Directive (PSD2) on January 1, 2021. Here are the key details for the adjustment.

PayPal customers are currently receiving an email from their bank notifying them of the improvements. These emails are not spam or phishing emails, as PayPal stated in recent days. Instead, PayPal is informing customers who had 2FA activated before the mandatory introduction on January 1, 2021, that they will now have the same capabilities as those for whom 2FA was automatically activated.

What do PayPal customers need to do? Nothing!

The rollout is scheduled for August and will include additional security components in the settings. In addition to the Authenticator and Passkey, the PayPal app and WhatsApp will also be available as channels for the second factor. Additionally, it will be possible to remember devices or web browsers, which was not possible before. This will reduce the need to enter a code from the Authenticator for every transaction or login.

Customers do not need to do anything else, as the new options will be available starting next month. For customers who were automatically switched in 2021, these setting options are already available. PayPal refers to this step as a standardization.

  1. Users in Germany, being part of the European Union, will also benefit from these enhancements to PayPal's 2FA process, as they were also required to implement 2FA under the EU Payments Services Directive.
  2. For online shopping enthusiasts in Europe, including those in Germany, utilizing PayPal for online paying becomes even more secure with these additional login options, such as using the PayPal app or WhatsApp for two-factor authentication.
  3. As a result of these improvements, PayPal users across Europe, including those in Germany, can now enjoy a smoother online paying experience, as they can choose to remember their devices or web browsers for future transactions, reducing the need for manual code entries.
