Crime Scene: The Fat Hare - Weimar Sausage with Onions and Elms

Besides Munster, another "Schmunzel-Crime" spot? When the ARD announced an "Event-Crime" in 2013, one could be skeptical. But critics were quickly proven wrong: This new "Tatort" turned out to be quite successful and also received a warm welcome from the audience. This was mainly due to the brilliantly harmonious leading actors Nora Tschirner and Christian Ulmen. The supporting roles were also excellently cast with Dominique Horwitz, Thorsten Merten, Palina Rojinski, and Stephan Grossmann.

The setting of the crime is the German classical city of Weimar, which is presented here from its most beautiful side. There are romantic carriage rides through charming lanes, and almost all landmarks including the Goethe-Schiller Monument are shown. It's great that the investigating commissioner Lessing (Ulmen) is named after this!

Christian Ulmen as "Tatort" Commissioner

This Lessing (Ulmen) must solve the disappearance of a sausage factory owner with his colleague, the pregnant criminal commissioner Kira Dorn (Tschirner). She was famous in the whole town for her "Fette Hoppe" roast sausages. Was she abducted - or murdered? Since the woman was extremely quarrelsome and had nearly everyone in her environment in her sights, half of Weimar is a potential suspect. The unequal investigator duo delves deeper into her private life and encounters all sorts of shady characters and decayed existences.

Since its first broadcast, the ARD has already repeatedly shown this case. With good reason: "Die fette Hoppe" is a charming crime story that gets by without violence and brutality, and doesn't unnecessarily complicate the plot. Instead, there is a lot of humor and even a little romance. This well-balanced mix also works in repeated viewings.

One re-watches the Weimar "Tatort" debut "Die fette Hoppe" on Sunday, 14. July, at 8:15 pm.
