Weidle already swears loudly in the race about the botched run

Kira Weidle has a day to forget in the first speed race of the season. The first big mistake happens after just a few seconds of skiing. But an experience from the previous year gives her hope. The Italian Sofia Goggia puts down an outstanding super-G.

Kira Weidle hit her helmet three times with the flats of her hands and shook her head in annoyance. The best German downhill racer has thoroughly messed up her start to the season. 26th place in the super-G in St. Moritz, won by speed queen Sofia Goggia, is a far cry from her expectations. "It was a botched run from top to bottom," said Weidle in consternation on ARD about her "day to forget" in Switzerland. She called her performance "unfortunately very disappointing, I don't know what was going on there either. It wasn't what I'm capable of."

She was an indisputable 3.69 seconds behind Goggia from Italy, who took her 23rd World Cup victory ahead of Cornelia Hütter from Austria and Switzerland's Lara Gut-Behrami. Emma Aicher had a good run until she raced past a gate after around a minute. Katrin Hirtl-Stanggaßinger finished in 36th place.

Weidle breaks the silence after just ten seconds

Weidle opened the speed season with the number 1 - "not ideal", as she said, as there is no training in the super-G to get used to the course. Perhaps it wouldn't have hurt to see a few other racers beforehand, she said. And she probably hadn't had a good look around either. After less than ten seconds on the "Corviglia", she let out her first angry cry. Then she slowed down on the "Mauritius" passage, put the start of her turn at the "wall" sideways and also messed up the finish curve. However, she admitted that it was mainly down to herself that she wasn't able to show what she was capable of.

St. Moritz has been a "very special place" for Weidle since last year. Back then, she came third in the second downhill - after finishing 24th the day before. "I showed then what you can do better from one day to the next. I'll try to do that again," said the 27-year-old. The first downhill of the winter is scheduled for Saturday in the Engadine, followed by another super-G on Sunday.

Kira Weidle could use some winter sports practice to improve her alpine skiing, especially in super-G races. Despite her strong will and determination, her lack of preparation was evident in her disappointing performance, resulting in a significant gap from the leader, Sofia Goggia.

Even in the face of another challenging alpine skiing race, Kira Weidle remains hopeful, eager to learn from her mistakes and strive for better results in the upcoming winter sports events.
