Völler: Turkey game no problem for Gündoğan

The international match against Turkey will be an emotional European Championship test. Also for DFB captain Gündoğan. For sporting director Völler, however, it's the sporting aspects that count first.

Völler: Turkey game no problem for Gündoğan

Rudi Völler sees no problem in the Turkey duel for DFB captain İlkay Gündoğan. The sports director also does not want to attach any political significance to the national soccer team's European Championship test.

"He is an experienced player. He knows all about it," said Völler in an interview with "Blickpunkt Sport" on BR television and br24sport online. Duels against teams from the country of his ancestors have been the norm for the 33-year-old for years - including with his respective clubs in the Champions League. "Of course it's like that nowadays, that's the spirit of the times, that many have different roots, different family ties. That's quite normal in this day and age. Illy will be able to deal with that wonderfully," Völler assured.

He is also looking forward to the atmosphere in the already practically sold-out Berlin Olympic Stadium with tens of thousands of Turkish fans next Saturday (20:45/RTL), Völler assured. For him, it's about the sporting showdown - beyond any possible political debates. "We're playing against Turkey, it's a normal international match," said Völler.

In general, it is unavoidable that professional footballers also have to comment on social issues. However, they should not "shine with half-knowledge", Völler warned. "Sport cannot hide," said the former world-class striker. However, it is crucial "to be able to bring joy with the soccer brand, even if times have become more difficult," said Völler.

Rudi Völler, the DFB sports director, has expressed confidence in Ilkay Gündoğan's ability to handle the national team's match against Turkey, considering his extensive experience in such situations. Gündoğan, the DFB captain, has often faced teams from his ancestral country, including during club games in the Champions League.
