Vinzenz Geiger can't recover after a near fall

In a borderline competition, combined skier Manuel Faißt secured his first podium under head coach Eric Frenzel in Ramsau. But the result becomes secondary. After the competition, Olympic champion Geiger is beside himself and rants and rants and rants.

Vinzenz Geiger scolded the jury like a barnburner, Manuel Faißt was only cautiously happy about his podium coup: in the wind and snow lottery of Ramsau and Dachstein, combined skier Faißt may have secured the first German podium finish in the era of new head coach Eric Frenzel, but that seemed almost secondary in an event that was a health hazard.

"That was simply ridiculous, you can do without it," Olympic champion Geiger grumbled on ZDF: "It's about the safety of the athletes, you should really question yourself."

Geiger was in third place at the halfway point of the mass start competition - first the athletes skied together, then jumped - but was caught by a gust of wind after the take-off. "I didn't stand a chance," said the man from Oberstdorf, who at least managed the short jump in the deep snow, but was relegated to 16th place.

Norwegian Oftebro takes a bad fall

The Norwegian Jens Luraas Oftebro, who was leading before the jump, had a worse time of it, crashing badly on landing in the deep snow. This allowed the Austrian Johannes Lamparter to take home victory ahead of Norway's top star Jarl Magnus Riiber and Faißt. For Faißt from the Black Forest, it was the fifth third place of his career. "I'm pretty happy with that too," he said.

"I'm very happy for Manuel, but it was very difficult today," said Frenzel after a tough and 90-minute long competition. Runner-up Julian Schmid finished seventh, Pyeongchang Olympic champion Johannes Rydzek came eighth and Terrence Weber also made it into the top 10 in tenth place.

In the women's event, Nathalie Armbruster had previously achieved the best German result of the season in fourth place in the competition using the usual Gundersen method. The 17-year-old runner-up from Kniebis moved up significantly from ninth place after the jumping competition to finish 19.6 seconds behind third place.

Once again, Norway's Gyda Westvold Hansen did not give her competitors the slightest chance. In the 22nd race in the history of the Women's World Cup, the World Champion celebrated her 20th victory and 14th in a row. Westvold Hansen came out on top after 5 km on the track, 42 seconds ahead of her compatriot Ida Marie Hagen, with Finland's Minja Korhonen already 1:42.1 minutes behind in third place.

Vinzenz Geiger's frustration with the Nordic combination event's conditions extended beyond his own performance, criticizing the safety measures and the impact of the weather on the athletes.

In the crowded field of Nordic combination athletes, Geiger's teammate Manuel Faißt's podium finish was commendable, but the conversation quickly shifted to the event's challenging circumstances.
