VfB Stuttgart eager for clash with FC Bayern

VfB Stuttgart may end their exceptional season with second place, as their top striker Serhou Guirassy scores his 26th goal, resulting in a 1-0 win in Augsburg - also a new record. Surprisingly, Stuttgart's strong performance ignites hope for more.

After achieving incredible milestones in this remarkable season, VfB Stuttgart's star players conveyed their disappointment that it might not be enough for higher ranks. "It's sad we're not higher up," said Angelo Stiller with a smile after the 1-0 victory against FC Augsburg. Despite this, Stiller emphasized their enjoyment of the journey.

"Higher up" following the win in Augsburg means the second spot on the table - a coveted position that is not out of reach for VfB Stuttgart. This season, they have achieved a record of 22 wins, a feat only accomplished once in 2007 during their championship season, not including the 70 points they secured. This success on Friday night further demonstrates their exceptional season, with a potential title contender announcement.

Coach Sebastian Hoeneß noted, "We didn't want to give up third place, and now we're aiming a little higher for second." Bayern Munich could overtake them again with a single point against VfL Wolfsburg on Sunday at 5:30 PM CEST. However, the showdown for the championship runners-up spot is already decided. "We aimed for this, and we'll play for it on the final matchday," explained Hoeneß. The season's final encounter against Borussia Monchengladbach seems fitting for VfB.

The attention then shifts to the squad members, such as Guirassy, who scored his 26th goal, and winger Chris Fuehrich, both attracting national and international attention. Rumors suggest that Bayern Munich is interested in Guirassy, as well as other clubs. While this is acknowledged by Stiller, he remains hopeful for the future. "A few players may have caught the eye of potential suitors," said Stiller. "But I think we all want to continue playing Champions League football together."

To maintain the squad, Undav, a loan player from Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion for the rest of this season, also desires to remain with the team next year and make it to the Champions League with them. "I would definitely like to keep playing for VfB Stuttgart," he told DAZN.

Undav's contract with Brighton extends to the summer of 2026, but his loan term expires at the conclusion of this season. He witnessed Borussia Dortmund's Premier League win and Bayern Munich's close loss to Real Madrid this week. "We've imagined what it would be like to play in the Champions League," Undav stated. "Enjoy the matches and strive to go as far as possible, without our exit being in the group stage."
